Israel's coronavirus cabinet decided to fully reopen the country's education system, an official statement said Tuesday.

The cabinet voted in favor of a plan proposed by the education ministry to lift most restrictions on schools by Sunday (April 18), according to a statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office.

According to the new plan, adults and students will be monitored. If a person was diagnosed positive for coronavirus at a school, their entire age group and teachers would need to get tested before being allowed back to school.

With more than 52 percent of its 9 million population fully vaccinated, Israel has lifted most COVID-19 restrictions. Given that the vaccines cannot be administered to young people aged under 16, the education system has been reopening slowly.
